FUTURE / RESURRECTION – From the Opening to a Mystical Ending Where Various Elements Intertwine
Since ancient times, the deep mountains of the Kii Mountain Range have been believed to be home to the gods, fostering a strong tradition of nature worship. With the later introduction of Buddhism, the concept of Shinbutsu-shugo – the fusion of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, where deities and Buddhas are considered one – took root and spread, establishing the Kii Mountains as a sacred land for both Buddhism and Shugendo.
Because of this, Kumano came to be regarded as the "Gateway to the Pure Land," and the journey of "visiting the Pure Land and returning" symbolized death and rebirth, reinforcing Kumano as a "sacred land of resurrection." Even today, it continues to attract deep faith and devotion from countless people.
Similarly, Mt. Koya also embodies a unique religious worldview in which Buddhas and deities coexist with mutual respect for each other, making it a truly one-of-a-kind spiritual realm in the world.
