Getting Around in a Rental Car
In Wakayama, where unspoiled nature still remains, there are many places of interest scattered over a wide area, both along the coast and in the mountains. Many visitors may wish to rent a car and tour the sights at their own pace.
Cars can be rented at major train stations and airports. Advance reservations are recommended to take advantage of the multilingual GPS navigation system.
Service areas (rest areas) are located at intervals of about 50 km on expressways, where you can stop for restrooms and restaurants. On ordinary roads, there are facilities called "Michi-no-Eki," where parking and restrooms are available 24 hours a day free of charge. The area is also a place to promote local attractions, so you can eat local gourmet food and purchase local specialties. Some facilities offer hands-on activities, so be sure to check them out.

Getting Around by Taxi
Taxi stands are usually located at hotels, train stations, and airports. When looking for a taxi on the street, check the sign on the front to see if it is marked 空車(vacant). However, in some areas it is unlikely that you will be able to find a taxi on the street, so it is recommended that you arrange for one at your hotel or other location.
Most drivers speak only Japanese, so it is a good idea to write down the address and phone number of your destination to facilitate the process of telling them where you are going. Please note that taxis in Japan are metered and the left rear door opens and closes automatically. The maximum number of passengers is four adults. Credit cards may be accepted, but it is recommended to have cash on hand. Also, tipping is not customary.
1. To hail a taxi, simply wave your hand. Taxis can often also be found outside stations.
2. Note that taxi doors in Japan are automatically operated.
3. Get in and tell the driver where you want to go. Use visual aids such as maps and guidebooks if necessary.
4. Once at your destination, pay the fare shown on the taximeter. Credit cards are sometimes accepted.

About Traveling with Children
Regardless of whether they use a free pass or ride with a regular ticket, fares for children under 12 (elementary school students) are half the price of an adult. Up to two infants or toddlers per adult are free of charge, except when using a reserved seat or the Green Car. From the third infant, the child fare will apply.
When renting a car, children under 6 years old are required by law to wear a child safety seat. Request this at the time of reservation.
