Mifune-matsuri Festival

The Mifune-matsuri Festival is the Kumano Hayatama Taisha Grand Shrine's annual festival. It takes place on the UNESCO-listed Kumanogawa River and involves transferring the divine spirit enshrined at Kumano Hayatama-taisha into a mikoshi (portable shrine) which is loaded onto a ceremonial boat and accompanied by nine other swift rowboats in what is a kind of regatta. In 2016, the festival was awarded national status as an intangible cultural asset.
